Inclusion is a basic principle of best practice in early childhood intervention support. Inclusion is a right – and every child has a right to be included and to participate in their community. Inclusion happens when children are viewed as capable and valued contributors as opposed to having deficits that need to be fixed. Inclusion is about embracing our diversity as a strength and viewing each child for their unique qualities.

Inclusion is not about ’fixing’ a child or improving their skills so that they fit into the community or education environment. Inclusion focuses on the whole environment, and making changes to it so  that all children can participate. In an inclusive environment diversity is acknowledged, respected and viewed as a resource for learning, growth and change.

Inclusion benefits everybody and makes a difference not just for now, but for the future.


A sense of belonging is crucial for a child’s development. Experience shows us that children with disability and/or developmental delay will achieve the best outcomes in settings that are inclusive.

By adopting a family-centred approach and forming a team around the child that collaborates effectively, you can develop and implement strategies that create more inclusive environments for children to flourish in.

Working with the National Quality Framework and best practice in early childhood intervention our Inclusion e-learning program provides all early childhood practitioners the knowledge and tools to create best support children and their families.


ECA and ECIA Joint Position Statement on the Inclusion of Children with Disability in ECEC Settings Reimagine Australia (as Early Childhood Intervention Australia) collaborated with Early Childhood Australia (ECA) to produce a Joint statement on the inclusion of children with disability in early childhood education and care.


At Reimagine Australia we believe that every child is entitled to access and participate in early childhood education and care programs which recognise them as active agents in their own lives and learning, respond to them as individuals, respect their families as partners and engage with their diverse backgrounds and cultures. To support the relationships between families, early childhood educators and early childhood intervention practitioners, we have created a suite of freely available ‘Working Together’ resources to promote and encourage a coordinated approach to inclusion for children with disability and/or developmental delay. Children needs inclusive environments, that is, environments that are accessible, accommodating, socially supportive and non-discriminatory, to thrive.
